"The Dreaded Internet"

Matthew 12:34-37- ESV

34 You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil.36 I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, 37 for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

My mother once had a doctor that referred to an online diagnoses as coming from “the dreaded internet”. The internet is a wonderful tool if used properly, but can also be a source of all kinds of evil. We must be careful what we allow ourselves and our children to view and participate in online. Just like with our other media consumption we must use spiritual discernment as we decide what is appropriate and what is not. Sometimes content is openly sinful and we have not doubt that we should avoid it, but at other times Satan sneaks in a vile lie with a little bit of truth. We must take precaution with what we view and what we share on social media. Again, there is a lot of good out there, but there is also a lot of bad. Social Media can be a pit of bad influence on our lives if we allow it to be.

Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks and if we always fill our hearts with inappropriate videos and comedy, that is what will come forth. When I was young we used to sing the kids song “Be careful little eyes what you see, There is a Father up above, looking down in tender love, so be careful little eyes what you see”. Let’s take that a step farther and say be careful little fingers what you click. The online world can be a wonderful venue for evangelism and goodness, but it can also be the “dreaded internet.” Take care this week what content we consume! -David McNees
